Rome was not built in a day. Although this adage is typically intended to illustrate that great things take time, it should also subtly instill the concept that great things can be achieved with sustained effort. To us, the adage means that in order to achieve a long term vision you need goals, time, and focused daily tasks. Once you have a clear idea of what you want to achieve, you need to come up with strategies, tactics, and ultimately daily routines that will help you get where you want to be. This is where SMART comes into play.
The SMART goals mnemonic has been around since the early 1980’s. SMART should be thought of as a way to direct your team’s daily efforts so that you achieve your long term vision. SMART is a way to ensure you are being clear with your direction when you ask someone to do a task:
S – Specific, be Specific about what you want done
M – Measurable, a task should be clearly defined so that it can be Measurable
A – Achievable, tasks need to Achievable by the person tasked
R – Relevant, ideally all actions map to a strategic goal
T – Timely, tasks should Timely (both in assignment and completion)
In our opinion, to fully implement SMART, you need a system.
By using the Wash.Systems – Operations Process Engine (OPEn), assigned tasks are instantly much more specific, timely, and measurable. When fully realized, OPEn is an excellent tool for getting your teams aligned on the daily tasks that need to happen in order to achieve your long term vision.
